Wanted:
Green Thumb Volunteer Gardeners (GTVG)
Are you someone that would like to tend a garden
occasionally, yet still be free to travel or do other things that
having your own full time garden might prevent? The Green Thumb

for you! Volunteers are currently needed to donate their time
and talents at the Templeton Community Garden, located behind
the Community Center at 601 So. Main Street.

Test Your Knowledge,
Then Test Your Soil
Moisture meters are a great way to determine when your soil is
dry enough to really need watering. While supplies last, free
moisture meters will be given to the first 20 people brave enough
to take a quick, twenty question conservation quiz at the TCSD
office. This offer is available to District residents 18 and older.
Retail price for the meter is $6.00. One per family, please.

Community Gardeners
|
|
Would you like to raise
your own organic vegetables, or even cut flowers for beautiful summertime
bouquets? Interested in spending time outdoors and meeting new people?
The answer may be the Templeton Community Garden Project! The Templeton
CSD Community Garden is a free program open to all residents of
Templeton CSD. Located behind the Community Center at 601 South
Main Street, the Garden has nearly 30 spots, all of which come with
their own water outlet for easy irrigation. To sweeten the deal,
TCSD will give away seed packets to the first 15 residents who renew
or initiate participation applications! Joining the program and
reserving a space is easy; just visit the Templeton CSD office at
420 Crocker Street to select your "spot in the plot" and
receive all information regarding maintenance and use. Some terms
of use include:
-
Plot tenders must reside within the Templeton Community Services
District boundaries.
- Gardeners shall maintain
only their assigned plots, and refrain from maintaining their
neighbors' areas. Traps will be provided for rodent control.
- Gardeners are required
to keep plots and adjoining pathways free of weeds and debris.
- Please be present
at all times when watering, and be careful not to over water.
- Railroad ties, cement
and mortared structures are prohibited. The Recreation Supervisor
must approve all temporary structures.
- Pets are NOT allowed
in the garden under any circumstances.
- Garden plots will
be freshly tilled and soil enriched by TCSD prior to March 1st.
Additional information regarding the Community Garden, including
upcoming workshops, is available by calling Michelle Costa,TCSD
Recycling Coordinator, at 434-4900. So dust off those hoes and trowels,
and get ready for a great year in the Garden!

The Gopher Guardian
Delbert Herschbach, pictured here, is just one of the many people
who have volunteered for TCSD’s Environmental Programs.
Dubbed affectionately as the “Gopher Guardian” by
our staff, he spent several months last year trapping the mischievous
munchers in the Community Garden. A retired flower grower and
former owner/operator of Three Way Farms in Watsonville, Delbert
has also donated numerous starter plants to local residents as
well as sharing his expert advice with Community Garden plot tenders.
His expert knowledge of Eucalyptus is so valued that he was once
flown to Australia to conduct a workshop there on the plant.
