Recycle Everybody's Doing It, Are You?

Community Recycling Options Broaden

3250 La Cruz WayA new low-cost recycling/resource reduction option is now available for North County residents. Habitat for Humanity's retail Restore opened in January. At Restore, the general public can purchase used, recently discontinued, or construction-surplus building supplies. Donated items are accepted from individuals, as well as, local retail outlets and contractors. The items are then offered for sale at Habitat's Templeton store. For conservation-minded consumers, the store is a way to combine personal, environmentally protective values, with consumer value. From doors, cabinets and sinks, to brass bathroom accessories, vinyl flooring, electrical and/or irrigation supplies, the Restore is resource reduction brought to a whole new level! Open Thursdays through Saturdays, Restore is located at 3250 La Cruz Way (off of Cow Meadow).

And remember, whether it's green waste, household plastics, glass and aluminum products, or even construction supplies, recycling is good for the environment, and good for the pocketbook! So, reduce, reuse and recycle whenever possible!

Local Recycling Opportunities

Opportunities to recycle specific types of itemsTrue resource reduction means incorporating all three components of a recycling plan into one’s lifestyle. Reducing the amount of packaging or one-way items one buys, reusing items whenever possible, and then finally discarding them into your recycling bin, will assure that each and every person is doing their part in protecting our precious resources. Besides blue bin recycling, there are several other local opportunities to recycle specific types of items. Here are just a few of the ones found within the Templeton community:

Computer monitors/ televisions
Eyeglasses
Building supplies/fixtures
Garden bulbs

Recycling Efforts Expanded

Templeton CSD has recently acquired lightweight, portable recycling receptacles for use at Templeton's Summer Concerts Series, the Templeton Girls Softball Tournament and other community events. Made from recyclable plastic, these black collection bins will debut in June and be used exclusively to collect glass or plastic bottles, and aluminum cans.

Portable recycling receptacles available"Many of the people attending events like our summer concerts bring their own sodas or alcoholic beverages, and often their empty cans or bottles are left behind in park trashcans after the performances. Having additional receptacles available enables us to keep more of these containers out of the landfill," said Michelle Costa, the District's Recycling Coordinator.

According to Costa, a limited number of the unassembled bins will also be provided to other local community organizations planning events in the Templeton area. District residents can support the program by depositing all acceptable beverage containers in the bins whenever possible, and by not using them as trashcans.

The reusable receptacles are made possible by funding through the
California Department of Conservation.
